Island to Island: a Graphic Exchange Between Taiwan & New Zealand

In 2014-2015 Ant was honoured to be one of six artists involved in a graphic novelist exchange between Taiwan and New Zealand. Ant spent a week in New Zealand and a week in Taiwan, living and hanging out with Rae Joyce, Tim Gibson, Ahn Zhe, 61 Chi and Sean Chuang. Amidst dumplings and bubble milk tea, the six artists became good friends, and the time spent learning about each others’ lives and cultures resulted in a highly personal, collaborative graphic novel where each artist presented a comic ‘gift’ to each of the artists from the visiting country.

Ant saw this as a great opportunity to write three short, personal stories, draw kung fu, and experiment with his art style; combining traditional pen and brush linework with digital watercolour textures, to evoke the landscapes of Taiwan.
